2/16 BriBri

Today was a unique, fun adventure! We drove not even an hour southwest from Cahuita to the Yorkin River area that borders with Panama. We boarded two boats on the fresh (mountain) water river for another 45 minutes into the BriBri indigenous community area. Students were welcomed by the locals onto their organic farm where they live. We got to see firsthand how the BriBri cultivate cacao and we too made some chocolate ourselves straight from the plant!
We had lunch cooked by the natives over a wood burning stove - rice w/ chicken, tomatoes and pineapple from the farm and freshly squeezed starfruit juice. Doña Otilia took us around and showed us all the medicinal plants they grow and then we practiced our bow and arrow skills. It's not that easy! We were also serenaded by Doña Otilia with a nice song about family. The boat ride back to our bus was nice, breezy, and only a tiny bit wet. The river area is really beautiful jungle vegetation and we've seen about a dozen toucans.

Creatures seen today: Toucans, egrets, group of King vultures, 2 agoutis, 1 sunbittern, 1 osprey, 1 monkey, 1 red lored parrot, and lots of chickens :)
